The Knowledge has been given first look at the plans for the new and improved SU, in partnership with Plymouth University, coming this September.

The website detailing the plans and artist impressions is to be officially revealed at tomorrow’s Plymouth University open day (Wednesday 25th June) but we’ve been offered the chance to show you first!

Over the summer a team of dedicated architects, designers and builders are revamping our entire Students’ Union ready for a new academic year at the university. The new SU plans to be a dynamic space to ‘cater for our memberships diverse requirements’.

All aspects of the union have been revamped right down to the entrance, disabled access and locker facilities.

The image below depicts the overall layout of the SU:

What will each room be like?

The Entrance

As you enter the SU you will notice an extended canopy for increased shelter – perfect when you’re stuck in the long, Friday night queue in the Plymouth rain. The entrance also offers a bonded resin gravel path and a new sound and light system.

The entire entrance offers better access to the building, nightclub and coffee shop. As you enter the building you will notice ticket booth entry for faster access, a much larger foyer to cater for stands and student activities and improved disabled access. The entrance is also home to club and society lockers which can be accessed 24/7.

The Snug

The dark and cramped original Snug will now offer an expansive welcoming space with an entirely revamped light and sound system and better access to the rest of the SU.

As well as a wider space, the Snug will offer social seating that extends to Burst Bar. Seating includes 4 fixed social pods each with their own built-in TV. The bar will also be expanded and increase service to cater to the new social setting.

Illusion

In keeping with the rest of the revamp, Illusion will offer a state-of-the-art sound and light system and will be completely redecorated. This area will become a dynamic environment offering multi-purpose space that is versatile enough to provide a work and play area simultaneously through the use of room dividers. The room also offers HD projection display space.

Illusion will offer an extended coffee space from The Lounge and a new multi-purpose bar as well as being fully equipped with sofa booth seating and new hire facilities for meetings and socials.

Sublime

Finally, Sublime will be entirely refurbished to accommodate multi use and house a new social seating layout described as displaying ‘dynamic versatile seating architecture’.

The area will be fully equipped with new pool tables and a separate space for the dance floor. Sublime will also have an improved light and sound system as well as HD projection display space and video projection mapped walls.

When talking to The Knowledge UPSU President, Sarah Bowman, stated:

“The refurbishment is an extremely exciting adventure for the Students’ Union and I believe that it’s going to be an amazing and transformed space for our students to use. It demonstrates the partnership that we have with the University and shows our dedication to improving the lives and experience of our members.

“The new layout will expand our daytime spaces, opening up the coffee shop, providing more seating areas and opening access for students to meet friends, do university work or to come to one of our many events.

“By creating more comfortable spaces for students to go during the day, we hope to provide a little bit of something for everyone and encourage all students to come and have a look in September!

“We really hope that you like it!”
